Embrace

Whale Mall
Queensland Museum Kurilpa, Brisbane
The design was brought to life with 3D modeling and printing technologies. Using clear and coloured resin and the sun to set the resin.
This concept is designed to be hung amongst the Humpback Whale exhibition outside the Brisbane Museum in South Bank. The exhibition consists of three fiberglass humpback whales - a father, pregnant mother, and a child - that was hung in the 80’s. Humpback whales are particularly interesting for their natural instincts for always protecting over attacking first and have been known to protect humans from dangers.
The design highlights the innate behaviors of these creatures through themes of family, guardianship, and protection. This design resembles a familial embrace and protective embrace of a smaller individual and aims to draw feelings of comfort and reassurance in the viewer.
Each part was hand sanded for a frosted finish.
The final prototype was hung with a brushed aluminum pipe, a simple connection to maintain focus on the lamp.
5-10 Embrace lamps would be hung around the whale exhibition as an emphasis to the exhibit and to draw attention to themes of family, guardianship and protection to the viewers.
