I utilised 3D printing materials and geometries for its abilities to create complex organic shapes. I created test prints to find the best methods of connection, texture and fill to create the desired outcome. By sanding, I was able to turn the clear coloured resin to a frosted texture enhancing the diffusion of light.

Embrace

Family . Guardianship . Protection

The Project

Humpback whales are like us humans, we take care of our family.

Embrace connects us with humpback whales, reminding the viewer of the intelligence and human like behaviors observed in the species. Being naturally peaceful creatures, these whales prefer to protect over attack and form close family connections in their pods. This lamp emulates the nature of these interesting creatures through wrapping protective forms, which evoke emotions of guardianship, family and comfort.

Location and Inspiration

This lamp was intended to hang amongst the Humpback Whale exhibition at the Queensland Museum Kurilpa, which features three fiber glass humpback whales; a mother, father and child. The lamp compliments the whale exhibition by allowing people to connect better with the animals.
